FAQs, or “Frequently Asked Questions” are a great way to answer our customer’s most pressing questions. When it comes to roof replacements, we hear the same concerns from our customers. It makes sense; a new roof is a big investment, so you want to make sure you’re making a good choice, and that you’re informed with what you need to know.

With that said, we thought we’d share the most frequently asked questions from customers when they approach us about a roof replacement. We hope the answers make you feel that much better about the decision.

When do I need a new roof?

A new roof is a huge investment, but one that will protect your home and family, while increasing the value of your property and giving you a great selling point if the time comes to list your house on the market. However, homeowners are often plagued with self-doubt about the roof over their heads.

We’d suggest replacing your roof if any of the following is occurring:

• Cracked masonry on your chimney

• Curled, buckling, mission, or otherwise broken shingles

• Wet spots on your ceiling or in your attic/crawlspace

• A “spongy” feeling when walking across your roof

What roofing options are there?

How do I choose a roofing contractor?

We don’t want to get ahead of ourselves, but a great roofing contractor has nothing to hide. Beyond that, check around with your family and neighbors to see who they chose.

When a contractor is doing well, then you’ll also see their trucks around town. Do they look busy? If so, then they’re probably doing good work (we’re always busy—hint, hint.) Also, how do the trucks look? Are they clean? Are the drivers professional? That’ll tell you a lot about who the people behind the company are.

What do I need to do before the roofers come?

One of the great things about roofing is, once you've paid the deposit, we'll do the rest of the work. No, you don't need to go onto your roof or do much of anything before we arrive. However, on the big day, we'd suggest you remove any photos or other loose items hanging from the walls of your home. Roofs take a lot of nails, and all that hammering can knock some of the less-secure items off your walls.

How long do new roofs last?

A brand new roof, assuming it’s done by a professional using the top roofing systems, should last you a good 20 years. With anything, there are exceptions. Depending on the weather in your region and the amount of maintenance you perform, your roof could last longer or require a replacement earlier.

How do I get the most out of my new roof?

Great question—your roof, under ideal conditions, should last you on average two decades. To actually reach that goal, we suggest you have a roofer perform an annual roof inspection to spot any problems before they become major issues. Beyond that, we’d also suggest you maintain and clean your gutters. Standing water due to poorly performing gutters can rot the wood around your roof and create points of moisture egress that will compromise your roof’s integrity.
